RJ SMITH, FOUNDER

Through his boutique, full-service construction company, RJ Smith has built a reputation for creating beautiful, distinctive homes for clients in the Hermosa and Manhattan Beach communities in California’s South Bay. Their work has been featured on MarthaStewart.com, California Homes and Digs Magazine, among others. Smith and his team specialize in creating both custom and spec homes, the latter of which are distinguished by details that make them feel like custom builds. They achieve a unique level of personalization on each project by collaborating with architects and designers from the design and planning stages, and focusing intensely on details to bring each client’s vision to life. On coastal sites, Smith and his team make the most of a home’s proximity to surf and sand by developing spaces with a seamless engagement between interior and exterior living areas. Smith says: “I love building stuff that people aren’t just going to look at, they’re going to really use.”

Transitional Pool

Smith and his team built this coastal home on a double lot situated on a walk street that is steps from the ocean in Manhattan Beach. The home offers stunning ocean views from every level, including an upper patio. Smith and his team flush-mounted WD-series heaters by the poolside bar and on the main patio, which is surrounded by louvered doors that open to create an indoor-outdoor space. Smith chose the WD-Series because homeowners can optimize their comfort by using one or both elements. To maximize enjoyment of the ocean view and outdoor living area, Smith and his team included a show-stopping feature — a one-of-a-kind, automated pool with a retractable cover that transitions from pool area to backyard with the push of a button.

Smith chooses Infratech for his projects because the heaters enable homeowners to optimize their comfort in outdoor spaces, with bespoke design versatility that disappears when not in use. The heaters also require little to no maintenance — a major consideration at sites continually exposed to salt air.
